Chipper Tip: The Importance of Family Bonding Time

This week, Chipper advocates the importance of family bonding time. Not only does family bonding time provide a space to enjoy the presence and company of other family members, it also teaches children the right way to interact with people.

As cited by CBS Houston, “Family Bonding Time” is defined as “a designated time your family plans to interact with each other over a group of activities or a major fun project.” Some benefits of allotted family bonding time include:

1. Improved communication and relationships between family members

A lot of the time, parents become frustrated due to lack of communication between themselves and their children. Because this is time set aside to bond with other family members, it is a good time for effective communication to occur.

 2. Improved respect between family members

CBS Houston states that “Making a habit of displaying interest in the well being of your spouse and children will make them more likely to consult family members when there are personal problems occurring.”

3. Family members learn to value each other more and are thus less likely to hurt each other

As communication and respect improves between family members, consideration for each other will undoubtedly improve as well. Another idea in resolving conflict could be to participate in a creative project to encourage communication and release.

Now, there are many ways to share family time together. Here are some ideas:

-Go to a museum together and have everyone pick out an exhibit they would like to see

-Go to the park together and play sports or games together

-Have a family game night and play your favorite board games!

-Go hiking together

There are many more ways in which to share family time together. Here are some ways to spend family together every day:

-Share meals together! Instead of everyone eating together in front of the television or separately in their own rooms, eat together at the dinner table to encourage conversation and bonding.

-Do chores or clean together. Instead of doing them separately, make a game out of doing chores together. Ideas include: hamper hockey, getting ice cream or a treat after all chores are  finished, etc.

Ways to spend time together as a family are truly endless. Let’s Go Chipper for family bonding time by entering our Photo Contest!
